How did the Olympics get a highly available consistent failover database with Atomikos?

Atomikos was used to build the transactional website for one of the last Olympic games. With two databases in place (one master and one hot failover), the system used Atomikos to manage updates across the two databases - so that the hot failover was always current and ready to take over.
