How did the Olympics get a high­ly avail­able con­sis­tent failover data­base with Atomikos?

Atomikos was used to build the trans­ac­tion­al web­site for one of the last Olympic games. With two data­bas­es in place (one mas­ter and one hot failover), the sys­tem used Atomikos to man­age up­dates across the two data­bas­es - so that the hot failover was al­ways cur­rent and ready to take over.
